There are not many associations that cover second hand cars and the policies in which they are sold. The problem is that there is no law governing who can and cannot sell a used car. If you own the car then you are allowed to sell it by law, that is one of the simple freedoms that we hold to us. However, that does not mean that there is not a lot of people out there that are willing to scam us in the buying of a used car. For this reason many people are wary of such deals and will avoid them at all costs. Depending on where you live there may be some laws that cover the person that is purchasing the used car. In most areas this is referred to as the Lemon Law. This law is in place to ensure that you are not getting ripped off when you purchase a used car. It requires the seller to be completely honest and upfront about the car and holds them legally responsible if something should happen. Well the main problem with this kind of law is that it is full of holes.
There are more than enough ways for someone who is clever to skirt the law and thus rip off an unwary consumer. So you should always be careful about who you deal with when it comes to the used cars that you purchase. The best defense is too ensure that you do not deal with someone who is offering a deal too good to be true. Avoid the cars that seem to be for sale well below the market value because in most cases there is something wrong with them.
The insurance companies may offer some help in this area but it will be very limited in scope. They may be able to offer some insight into the dealings with the particular type of car that is around but nothing more than that. You could also check with the local police department. If they have a file on the person that you are dealing with and it contains issues regarding used cars then you will most likely want to avoid any kind of dealing with them. Have the car checked out before you make the purchase and of course there is no reason why you should not ask to see some form of identification from the person when you are sealing the deal. This will prevent you from having a lot of problems down the road.
